OFTPT

Our Team

Dr. Maria Treadaway

I have a diverse background that has shaped my expertise in language assessment and aviation training. My journey began when I attained my commercial pilot's license in 2001, but in the aftermath of 9/11, I made the decision to pursue English language teaching instead of a professional flying career. This path eventually led me to complete a PhD in Applied Linguistics, where I focused on a critical need in the aviation industry: establishing standardized language proficiency assessments for ab initio cadet pilots from non-English-speaking backgrounds.

With over 22 years of experience in my field, I am proud to have developed the Overseas Flight Training Preparation Test (OFTPT) as part of my doctoral research. This test addresses the urgent need for a reliable and standardized measurement tool, calibrated to the International Civil Aviation Organization's Language Proficiency Rating Scale, to ensure linguistic readiness among aspiring pilots before they embark on their practical flight training. In recognition of my contributions to language testing and aviation training, I am honored to have received the Vice-Chancellor's Prize for Best Doctoral Thesis in 2022 (University of Auckland) and the Jacqueline Ross TOEFL Dissertation Award in 2023.

What sets my approach apart from others in the industry is the tailored nature of the OFTPT. As ab initio pilots prepare for this test, they simultaneously develop the language knowledge, skills, and abilities required for successful flight training. This ensures they can build strong relationships with their instructors, teachers, and peers, enhancing their overall aviation experience. The OFTPT is also supported by comprehensive online training materials that focus on developing the language skills of non-native ab initio pilots. My mission is to ensure safe skies and enjoyable, efficient aviation training for all.

My work is guided by a commitment to continuous improvement and safety in aviation. I am always open to feedback and actively seek ways to enhance the effectiveness and relevance of my services. Challenges and obstacles in my work are seen as opportunities for innovation and creative problem-solving. I believe in building long-term client relationships, working collaboratively with stakeholders to create a safe, enjoyable, fulfilling, and efficient aviation training environment for everyone involved. As a member of professional organizations like the International Civil Aviation English Association, the Association of Language Testing Australia and New Zealand (ALTAANZ), and the International Language Testing Association (ILTA), I remain committed to staying at the forefront of my field.

What I love most about my work is the knowledge that I am helping aspiring pilots achieve their dreams in the most enjoyable and safe way possible. Contributing to a global industry that affects the lives of millions of people brings me immense satisfaction.

If you're interested in using the OFTPT to assess the linguistic readiness of your ab initio cadet pilots, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I look forward to partnering with you to enhance training efficiency and safety through language proficiency within the aviation industry.
